Book to Movie: Codex Alera - The Furies of Calderon

Plot:
Cover of Furies of Calderon
In the realm of Alera, where people bond with the furies-elementals of earth, air, fire, water and metal, fifteen-year-old Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. But when his homeland erupts in chaos - when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies - Tavi's simple courage will turn the tides of war. (Source: Goodreads)

Could it be a good movie?
In my opinion, the "Pokemon" meets "Lost Roman Legion" Fantasy Book could translate pretty well to the big screen. A future writer would have to trim down overtly dragging scenes in the middle part of the book. I really liked the down-to-earth fantasy, which should mirror in a classic movie direction.
My best comparison would be: Avatar - The Last Airbender, both have mythical powers connected to the elements; both world take heavy influence from real history, Ancient China and Ancient Rome, respectively.
The comparison already shows the trap of a possible film adaptation: this is not for little children. The source material, the TV show and the book, deal with adult themes and dark decisions in a light world, nonetheless should you dumb it down - the audience will punish you for it.

  3. I love this series! I want it to be a movie so bad! The movie would be amazing! And yes, I agree. They need to follow the book. I would hate to see it become a movie, only for it to be messed up like they did the Eragon movie.

  5. Well I never heard of Percy Jackson and it has a third movie in the works and I never even heard any of my friends mention Twilight but a lot of them started picking up the books after the movie came out. and Furies of Calderon has a lot more going for it then Twilight that's for sure. With the Superhero movies coming out so constantly and peoples love for Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and A Song of Ice and Fire I don't see how Codex Alera movies could fail if done right... and maybe remove some of the rape theme from Furies of Calderon.

  6. they also need to get the look of the characters correct! they screwed up horribly with the Eragon movie. the characters like the Urgals and the Elves didn't even lookmlike how they were portrayed in the book

  7. I think a TV series would be a better option than a movie. A movie will force cutting down of scenes (unless each book is made into multiple movies like the hobbit). On the other hand a 6 season series should be a good one to watch provided they stick to the book for the most part.
It is surprising though that this series hasn't been picked up for either the big or small screen.
